About Roots-Raíces

Our Approach to Healing

Bilingual, trauma-informed, and grounded in culture — our philosophy of care meets you exactly where you are.

How We Began

A Practice Built on Cultural Trust.

Roots-Raíces Bilingual Counseling was founded on a simple belief: healing happens faster, and more fully, when you don’t have to translate your inner life into a second language or a foreign cultural framework to be understood.
We built our practice around bilingual, bicultural care — for individuals, couples, and families who want a therapist fluent not just in their language, but in the values, history, and relationships that shape their lives.

Bilingual from the First Session: Every intake, evaluation, and session is available fully in English or Español.

Whole-Family Systems Lens: We treat individuals in the context of their relationships, not in isolation.

Evidence-Based & Body-Aware: Somatic Experiencing® and EMDR sit alongside traditional talk therapy.

Meet Your Therapist

Silvia Fernandez, MS, MFT, LPC-S, SEP

Welcome. I’m Silvia Fernandez, a Licensed Professional Counselor and bilingual therapist serving individuals, couples, and families in both English and Spanish.

I earned my Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy with an emphasis in Community Counseling from John Brown University. My clinical background and advanced training have prepared me to work from a relational, systemic, and trauma-informed perspective, recognizing that our emotional well-being is shaped not only by what happens within us, but also by our relationships, families, culture, and life experiences.

As a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner (SEP), I have specialized training in working with trauma and the nervous system. My approach integrates traditional psychotherapy with trauma-informed and body-based interventions to help clients better understand their emotional responses, develop greater regulation, and work toward healing in a safe and supportive environment.

I work with adults, couples, and families experiencing trauma, anxiety, relationship difficulties, life transitions, family concerns, and other emotional challenges. My goal is to provide a space where clients can feel heard and understood while developing the insight, resources, and skills needed to create meaningful change.

Bilingual & Culturally Responsive Counseling

I am bilingual in Spanish and English and hold a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with a minor in Psychology from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

As a Latina therapist, I understand that mental health cannot always be separated from culture, family, language, identity, immigration experiences, traditions, and the values we carry from one generation to another.

For many Latino and immigrant families, seeking therapy can be unfamiliar or even difficult. My goal is to provide culturally responsive counseling where clients can speak in the language in which they feel most comfortable and explore their experiences without having to leave important parts of their identity outside the therapy room.

Como Latina, entiendo la complejidad de nuestra identidad, nuestras raíces y nuestras experiencias. Estoy aquí para acompañarte.

Beyond the Therapy Room

My understanding of relationships and family life is informed not only by my professional training but also by my own life experiences. I have been married for 39 years, am the mother of three adult children, and am a grandmother of six.

Outside of my professional work, I enjoy reading, gardening, and spending time with my family.

My Approach to Therapy

I believe healing is not simply about reducing symptoms. It is also about understanding what happened to us, recognizing how our experiences continue to affect our minds, bodies, and relationships, and developing new ways of responding to life.

At Roots-Raíces Bilingual Counseling, you do not have to disconnect from your culture, language, family, or story in order to heal.

Your story matters. Your roots matter. And healing is possible.

Our Philosophy

We integrate mind-body practice for working through trauma.

Healing isn’t only a conversation — it’s something the whole nervous system takes part in. Alongside talk therapy, we draw on body-based approaches so trauma can be processed and released, not just discussed.

Clinical Excellence

Our Therapeutic Modalities, In Depth

Three evidence-based approaches, woven together with cultural humility and bilingual care.
Somatic Experiencing®

Healing Trauma Held in the Body

Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a body-oriented approach to healing trauma and stress disorders, developed from the observation that the nervous system often holds onto distressing experiences long after the event has passed.

Rather than relying solely on talking through a traumatic memory, SE gently helps you notice and release physical tension, working with the body’s own natural capacity for regulation and resilience.
For many of our bilingual clients, this approach offers a path to healing that doesn’t depend entirely on having exact words for what happened — the body’s story matters too.
EMDR

Reprocessing Difficult Memories

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they lose their emotional intensity and no longer control your present-day reactions.

Sessions involve recalling a difficult memory while engaging in guided bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements), which appears to help the brain file the memory away as “past” rather than something still being relived.
EMDR is often used alongside Somatic Experiencing® and traditional talk therapy, particularly for trauma, anxiety, and immigration-related psychological evaluations.
Systemic & Family Therapy

Understanding You Within Your Relationships

Systemic and family therapy looks beyond the individual to understand how family patterns, cultural expectations, and relational dynamics shape the difficulties you’re facing.
Whether you’re navigating conflict with a partner, tension between generations, or the ripple effects of a major life transition, this approach helps identify unhelpful patterns and build healthier ways of relating.
We bring particular sensitivity to multicultural and immigrant families, where generational and cultural differences often add complexity to family dynamics.
