Understanding Play Therapy

What Is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is a form of counseling that uses play — a child’s natural language — to help them express feelings, process difficult experiences, and build coping skills they may not yet have the words for.
Rather than sitting and talking the way an adult might in therapy, children work through toys, games, art, and storytelling, guided by a trained therapist who helps translate that play into insight and healing.
It’s often used to support children navigating anxiety, grief, family transitions (like divorce or a move), behavioral concerns, or trauma.
